Uncanny X-Force gets a new roster, new costumes and Puck!
We take our first look into Marvel Now!’s brand new Uncanny X-Force. Writer Sam Humphries and artist Ron Garney have re-invented the team like never before. There are some surprises in store including Storm’s new hairdo and the return of everyone’s favourite Canadian dwarf superhero – Puck. And judging by issue #1′s cover we’ll also be seeing the return of Bishop and Spiral. This is going to be good.
So did anyone else notice Storm’s crazy looking mohawk? Okay I’m being sarcastic. Not everyone is going to welcome this change with wide open arms but I’m digging it. Apart from the pluses in aerodynamics, the new style do make her look fierce and in some ways sexy or sexier. And how about them new costumes? I first noticed it on Psylocke with the big white X right across her chest. It looks cool but it doesn’t feel like Psylocke that we all know and love. It’s the sexy dark blue ninja outfit that makes her Psylocke. Close your eyes and think about Psylocke for a second. What do you see? Do you see dead people? No I see a cool pulsating psi-blade, long black hair and them legs. And the whole package wrapped up in dark blue. Not really feeling the black and white look. I understand the need to renew and give characters fresh looks but you don’t go messing around with a tried and true classic. Just ask Peter Parker!
First two pages in we already find out how emotionally unstable Storm and Psylocke really are. Both with relationship problems. But seriously, who doesn’t. First with Storm’s untimely divorce with the Black Panther and Psylocke’s complicated relationship with Archangel. It seems like they’re trying their all to keep it all together and in the back of your mind you know that either of them will pop anytime. Although I can see a strong bond that will develop between Storm and Psylocke. These two women are also going to star in an all-girl X-team with a brand new X-MEN starting in April. I’m super excited about that one.
Now if you’ve never heard of Puck before, he’s a former member of Alpha Flight. A noteworthy superhero team based in Canada. Puck is half the size of an average man. He’s been a bouncer and an experienced bullfighter. I seriously didn’t expect this guy to show up in this title. It was a nice surprise. You’ll learn to love the guy. He’s hilarious and a bit of player. Just check out this dialogue between him and Psylocke.
And you– You must be the ravishing Betsy Braddock. May I call you Lizzie? I’ll be damned if you don’t got legs taller than I am.
It’s Elizabeth. I’m sorry, you must have mistaken me for a common bar floozy.
Not for a second.
Then choose your words accordingly. And your thoughts too–
Take a look, maybe you’ll see something you like.
I’d rather lick this disgusting floor.
Ha! You’re going to be a great addition to my team.
Sorry. I don’t do teams anymore.
Whatever you say. But I’ve got something you’ll want to see. You ladies up for some dancing?
You gotta love it.
Another character whom we haven’t seen in a while is the mutant Bishop. I mean there’s nothing to spoil here considering he’s big noggin is on the front cover. So somehow he makes his way back to the present. I would love to know how he did it and what role is he going to play exactly in all of this. And if you’ve been following the Uncanny X-Force religiously, former member Fantomex has now split into three of himself. And you wouldn’t believe what Fantomex did to his female clone even if I told you. You’ll have to read the issue and find out for yourself.
So this new Uncanny X-Force team hasn’t really been assembled yet. But I do have a feeling that it will be Puck that will end up putting it together and lead the team starting with Storm and Psylocke whether they like it or not. Uncanny X-Force #1 is a great book. I had fun reading it and is a perfect jumping point for new readers and long time fans who wants to get back in the game.
